|“||You know nothing about who I am, and what I've done and what I want.||”|
Nesta is described as being very beautiful. She has brown hair, like her sisters, and sharp features. Her eyes are filled with that powerful, cunning, cruelty that she has perfected. She has blue-gray eyes and plump lips. She has impeccable posture and stands very tall. She is very slim and has full breasts. Nesta is always seen in a dress—when her family was poor and when their affluence returned.
Nesta is considered the cranky, hot-headed one and has built a facade over her emotions. Feyre believes that she sees so much and feels so much that she shields her heart with the fiery anger she gives out.
A Court of Thorns and RosesEdit
Nesta appears briefly in the beginning. She is shown to be selfish, cold, and distant. She does nothing to help Feyre provide for her family. She informs Feyre of her intention to marry Tomas Mandry, which Feyre advises her against twice. When Feyre arrives at her family's new manor after spending time in Prythian, Nesta reveals to Feyre that Tamlin's glamour didn't work on her as it did Elain and their father, leaving Nesta with full memories of what happened. As a result, when Feyre was taken by Tamlin, Nesta went into the village and hired the mercenary Feyre had previously engaged with to take her to the Prythian wall, though they were thwarted. This surprised Feyre and gave her a new perspective on her sister.
A Court of Mist and FuryEdit
Nesta is not pleased that Feyre has been turned into a fae. She becomes tolerant of the members of the Night Court, except for Cassian, but still maintains her smartmouthed appearance. Cassian and Nesta bicker throughout the book. In the ACOMAF target bonus story it is revealed that Nesta wanted to starve to death to anger her father into helping her family. It is also revealed that Thomas Mandray once ripped her dress apart, as he attempted to rape her, but Nesta was able to escape. This happening to Nesta angers Cassian into wanting to defend her. Nesta teases Cassian and he retaliates in an attempt to anger Nesta into opening up, she then pretends she is going to kiss him before kicking him right in the nuts and leaving him alone in the room with confused feelings. Cassian later promises to Nesta that he would be willing to die protecting Nesta and Elain in front of Rhys' Inner Circle and two of the mortal queens. It is also noted that Nesta didn't flinch from Cassian's touch. Feyre and Cassian later have a short conversation about Nesta, in which Feyre says that she believes Nesta feels emotions stronger than most people and as such walls herself off from the world to prevent feeling it and that the only person she truly loves at that point is Elain, whom she would do anything, give anything, and be anything for.
Nesta is kidnapped by Ianthe along with Elain. When the King of Hybern's plan to turn the sister's into Fae is revealed, he decides to turn "the pretty one"/Elain first. Nesta reacts wildly, bucking her body and screaming, fighting to save her sister against impossible odds. Cassian hears Nesta screaming and reacts to it, despite being badly injured and nearly unconscious. When Nesta herself is put in, she fights "like a wildcat", and as she's going into the Cauldron, she points a finger at the King, unnerving him. When Nesta comes out of the Cauldron, Feyre says she "immediately knew she was different", implying in a way different from most High Fae, if a true High Fae at all, and probably with some special abilities to boot. She immediately runs to Elain's side and pushes Lucien forcefully away. When Lucien states that Elain is his mate, she responds angrily. Mor is the one to winnow the sisters out of Hybern, to somewhere safe and secret in the Night Court.
A Court of Wings and RuinEdit
Nesta is seen for the first time in ACOWAR when Feyre visits them after arriving back at the Night Court. Nesta is described as devastatingly beautiful as a fae. She is very resentful and spiteful to Feyre and the Inner Circle, she also only seems to care about Elain. She refuses Cassian's offer to train her yet she agrees to practice her magic with Amren. As time goes by, she bonds with Feyre over their shared concern for Elain. Nesta agrees to go with the Inner Circle to the Court of Nightmares and after that, she slowly becomes warmer, except to Cassian of course.
After the batlle in the Summer Court, when Cassian returns a few days later than the rest , Nesta is seen to be noticeably concerned and worried for him. This is where we also see Mor react to her concern possessively. Later, in the book, she is inspired by her sister and goes for the meeting of the High Lords in the Dawn Court and is able to sense that the Cauldron is being used and that the wall had been shattered. This is where everyone realizes that Nesta is connected to the Cauldron and is able to sense it's movements and when its being used. This sense comes into handy when in battle and also when Elain is kidnapped.
At the last battle, Nesta could not stop cring when she heard the mention of her father by Drakon. That for once, after their downfall, he did not let them down and had brought troops and had even freed the Queen of the Black Land, the mortal Queen Vassa. She even risks her life along with Cassian by distracting the King of Hybern so that Feyre and Amren can nullify the Cauldron. At this moment, she attempts to fight the King but both she and Cassian are wounded badly. Her father is also shown to be killed by the King and she is shown to be moved by her father's declaration of love in his last moments. However the King of Hybern attacks them, and instead of escaping, she chooses to embrace a grievously wounded Cassian and face death with him rather than live without him. They express their regrets at not having spent enough time together. When suddenly, Elain stabs the back of the King and Nesta lands the killing blows and severs his head from his body.
Nesta, though initially unwilling, attends the meeting that Feyre called for on the subject of renegotiating the treaty. Prior to the meeting, she treats the sixth human queen, Vassa, coldly. She stiffens up when seeing her with Feyre. Vassa tells Nesta about how her father loved Nesta and about how he was a good man and treated her better than her own father, that she would live her entire life in gratitude for him, Nesta shows no reaction and stares her down coldly.
Back at the Night Court, Nesta is seen to be very withdrawn and upset, it is suspected that the cause of her sadness was the death of her father and the declaration of love and the apology he gave before being killed by the King of Hybern. She is so visibly shaken that she does not even visit Cassian on his recovery bed. She goes up into her rooms while the rest of the inner circle laughs and drinks wine together.
- The name, Nesta, is the Welsh diminutive of the name, Agnes. The meaning of the name is "Pure".
- Sarah J. Maas revealed that she originally intended for Nesta to be a stereotypical fairy tale evil sister, but after writing Nesta back at the manor in ACOTAR, Nesta's character development and potential exploded, leading to the Nesta we know today.
